You want to show at a gallery? By doing the research first on which galleries you like and would represent your work well, you not only impress the gallery owner, you also save yourself a lot of time and heartache.
An artist came into a gallery I used to work at one day. He was a sculptor, a really good sculptor, and he showed his work to the owner. The owner was nice and met him right on the spot, which is extremely rare for a busy gallerist. The only problem was this was a gallery that only worked with painters. The gallerist said I like your work, but I don't know how to place it and I've never exhibited a sculptor before. The good sculptor hadn't done his research.
Do the research first before you venture out with your portfolio. Go to openings, get on mailing lists, meet the other people that work at the galleries you like, meet the other artists that are represented by the galleries you like. Understand who you’re wooing and why.
